The Center for Balanced Living Holistic Health Symposium and Trade Show

This past Saturday, Casco Bay Organics was invited to attend the 1st Annual The Center for Balanced Living Holistic Health Symposium and Trade Show at The Center for Balanced Living at 74 Lunt Road in Falmouth. They packed their auditorium with everything from holistic healers to motivational brain coaching, to organic produce delivered, to reflexology gods, and rocks and crystals and stones OH MY!  The idea was to bring a strong group of like minded individuals together and introduce themselves and their passion to the community.

I had the sincere please of being seated next to Susan Kent, a Reiki practitioner and hypnotherapy extraordinaire.  What a delightful spirit and genuinely kind human being.  Susan was scheduled to give a group talk about hypnotherapy and I thought, hey why not. I have never been hypnotized! Let’s see how this goes.  I had no idea what was about to happen. People often think about hypnosis as being made in to someone’s puppet perhaps, but with hypnotherapy, it’s bit different. This is all about relaxation and being present in the space you create in your mind.  By the end of the session, which took about 20 minutes, the entire energy in the room had been calmed and everyone was extremely relaxed.  It felt almost like falling asleep, but being present, if you can wrap your brain around that! That energy stayed with me throughout the rest of the day. I felt, rejuvenated, awake, present, and HAPPY!

I met some cool cats from Anchor Wellness in Falmouth as well.  Matthew Baker, LMT teaches at SpaTech Institute and has practiced massage therapy since 2007.  Matthew also does reflexology. He offered me a session, so of course I said YES! I have plantar fasciitis and I knew reflexology was something involving your feet and massage. I was having a particularly good day on Saturday with minimal pain and by the end of the session, I was pretty much pain free and it has lasted me until today! I am thrilled! To have continued relief from day to day is not something I get on a regular basis and I am so excited for my appointment on Friday!  I cannot wait for more long lasting relief.

Take care of your feet. They carry you around!

It was a pleasure to meet so many people that share the same goal in life and in business. To be around people who truly care about your well being is inspiring and motivating. What you need to know, you YES YOU, need to take care of yourself.  Your body is your temple and you only get one shot. A wise person once said that once you lose your health, you will spend a lifetime trying to get it back.  Words to live by.

Be kind to you. Be kind to your loved ones.  Be kind to all creatures, great and small. Live, laugh, love, and breathe and most importantly, do not forget to smile.  You are amazing!

Why organic? What is conventional? What is the big deal?

Why organic?  What is conventional? What is the big deal?

Remember when your parents would tell you, “You are what you eat!”  The amount of truth in this statement is telling.  When I was a kid, I LOVED pickles!  LOVED THEM! There was no pickle I wouldn’t eat and I ate them all!  I was at a friend’s grandparents’ house for a birthday party, probably 8 or 9 years old, and there I was, standing by the snack table, stuffing my face with PICKLES! Nanny, my friend’s grandmother, said, “You know, you keep eating those like that and you will turn in to a pickle!” I knew that I wouldn’t ACTUALLY turn in to a pickle, but there was a boatload of truth to that statement as well.

You are what you eat.  Think about that.  Now think about what you ate today. How much of that was whole, real food?  How much of that was conventional? Was any of it organic? Do you know the difference?

CONVENTIONAL

Foods grown conventionally are foods that are grown using conventional standards.  What does this mean?

“Conventionally grown is an agriculture term referring to a method of growing edible plants (such as fruit and vegetables) and other products… Conventionally grown products, meanwhile, often use fertilizers and pesticides which allow for higher yield, out of season growth, greater resistance, greater longevity and a generally greater mass.” (oh how we love Wikipedia)

Fertilizers and pesticides used in conventional growing are synthetic. These products force more production and the higher yield that keeps conventional produce so low in cost. One of the most heavily treated fruits are apples. Because they are so prone to pests, they are treated at many stages of their life cycle and where do you think all those pesticides end up? An apple a day, keeps the doctor away?

These things keep me awake at night.

ORGANIC

Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. It excludes or strictly limits the use of various methods (including synthetic petrochemical fertilizers (yuck) and pesticides; plant growth regulators such as hormones; antibiotic use in livestock; genetically modified organisms; human sewage sludge; and nanomaterials for reasons including, sustainability, openness, independence ,health,  and safety. (more Wiki)

Human sewage sludge?  WHAT WHAT WHAT???!!! I’ll have exactly ZERO of that please!

Organically grown foods do not use any of the conventional methods. In fact, they are held to a much higher standard.  Treatment for pest and other garden critters are of organic methods. There are no synthetic ingredients in the fertilizers and organic methods of growing go back to nature using carefully monitored watering and fertilizing systems, that include organic matter derived from nature such as seaweed, egg shells, bone meal, compost, and more.

A quick way to make sure you are getting ORGANIC GOODNESS ONLY, check out your PLU codes at the grocery store. They will have FIVE numbers and start with the number NINE!!! Pay close attention and be good to yourself!

Happy eating!!!

Ch Ch Ch CHIA Seeds

Have you heard all the talk about Chia seeds?  Do you know what they are?  Did you know that they are more than just the little seeds you plastered on a clay head and placed in your kitchen window?

Chia seeds are interesting to say the least. They can be eaten raw on salads or yogurt.  They can also be mixed with your favorite beverage for a little texture.  They form a slippery coating when soaked in a liquid. Some can deal with that texture, some can’t.  You will never know until you try!  Ever tried Kombucha with the seeds in it?  If so, then you have already had Chia seeds!

Right up there with blueberries and acai berries, Chia seeds are LOADED with antioxidants! They are also loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and iron! Gimmie gimmie!

Some of the benefits to making these little treats a daily part of your diet are:

Digestion – by helping to regulate bowel function, improve digestion process

Helpful in treating Anemia which is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to tissues, causing fatigue and many other health problems.

Wanna fight back? Make an anemia-fighting smoothie with:

2 cups of spinach

1 tablespoon of dandelion root powder

2 beetroots

1 banana

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

1 avocado

Blend all the ingredients thoroughly and drink it 1 or 2 times daily.

These little magic seeds also help cleanse the body and increase the red blood cell count.

One of my favorite ways to eat Chia seeds is to make a pudding!  Yep, a non-dairy, vanilla or chocolate, sweetened pudding. This couldn’t be easier and couldn’t be yummier!  Sweets at night are a must have in my house and this fits in perfectly without making me feel guilty for eating it!  You can also make this with milk if you like! You are in charge of your own destiny!

CHIA SEED PUDDING

¼ Cup Chia Seeds

½ cup Coconut milk (this will vary depending on how thick you like your Chia seed pudding).

1 tsp. vanilla

1 to 2 tbsp. agave nectar or honey (you decide how sweet you wanna be J)

Mix all of the ingredients together and refrigerate overnight!  I had to play with the ratios of this recipe to get what I wanted.  Feel free to add your own twist to make it just right for you!

Enjoy!
