Happy Monday, Mainahs!

Had a little surgery on Friday so I’m going to keep this quick!

We have Red Leaf from The Broadturn Farm! We have Golden Frills Mustard Greens from Stonecipher! Cantaloupe, Zuchinni, Peaches, and Broccoli!

Recipe Of The Week: Mustard Green Gratin

If you haven’t donated this week please consider!!!This week’s donation will be going to a friend of mine. Her baby boy, Beckett, has a disease called Blount’s Disease.

Blount’s is a growth disease that affects the bones of the lower leg causing extreme bowing.

There is a surgical procedure that can help this but the cost is astronomical. The co-pay alone is $7.000. I say we do what we can to help get little Beckett new legs! I will match all donations and post the money to

their Go Fund Me Page and all the credit goes to you guys! Please leave Cash/Check for your drivers made out to Casco Bay Organics or feel free to donate directly to their Go Fund Me Page. It is just easier to keep

track of the donation for matching if it all goes at once. Thank you guys so much! You have no idea how grateful I am to share a network with all of you. I really believe we make a difference

Happy Eating!

Why organic? What is conventional? What is the big deal?

Why organic?  What is conventional? What is the big deal?

Remember when your parents would tell you, “You are what you eat!”  The amount of truth in this statement is telling.  When I was a kid, I LOVED pickles!  LOVED THEM! There was no pickle I wouldn’t eat and I ate them all!  I was at a friend’s grandparents’ house for a birthday party, probably 8 or 9 years old, and there I was, standing by the snack table, stuffing my face with PICKLES! Nanny, my friend’s grandmother, said, “You know, you keep eating those like that and you will turn in to a pickle!” I knew that I wouldn’t ACTUALLY turn in to a pickle, but there was a boatload of truth to that statement as well.

You are what you eat.  Think about that.  Now think about what you ate today. How much of that was whole, real food?  How much of that was conventional? Was any of it organic? Do you know the difference?

CONVENTIONAL

Foods grown conventionally are foods that are grown using conventional standards.  What does this mean?

“Conventionally grown is an agriculture term referring to a method of growing edible plants (such as fruit and vegetables) and other products… Conventionally grown products, meanwhile, often use fertilizers and pesticides which allow for higher yield, out of season growth, greater resistance, greater longevity and a generally greater mass.” (oh how we love Wikipedia)

Fertilizers and pesticides used in conventional growing are synthetic. These products force more production and the higher yield that keeps conventional produce so low in cost. One of the most heavily treated fruits are apples. Because they are so prone to pests, they are treated at many stages of their life cycle and where do you think all those pesticides end up? An apple a day, keeps the doctor away?

These things keep me awake at night.

ORGANIC

Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. It excludes or strictly limits the use of various methods (including synthetic petrochemical fertilizers (yuck) and pesticides; plant growth regulators such as hormones; antibiotic use in livestock; genetically modified organisms; human sewage sludge; and nanomaterials for reasons including, sustainability, openness, independence ,health,  and safety. (more Wiki)

Human sewage sludge?  WHAT WHAT WHAT???!!! I’ll have exactly ZERO of that please!

Organically grown foods do not use any of the conventional methods. In fact, they are held to a much higher standard.  Treatment for pest and other garden critters are of organic methods. There are no synthetic ingredients in the fertilizers and organic methods of growing go back to nature using carefully monitored watering and fertilizing systems, that include organic matter derived from nature such as seaweed, egg shells, bone meal, compost, and more.

A quick way to make sure you are getting ORGANIC GOODNESS ONLY, check out your PLU codes at the grocery store. They will have FIVE numbers and start with the number NINE!!! Pay close attention and be good to yourself!

Happy eating!!!

MINT To Be! A Lemon, Cucumber, Mint Water Detox!

Mint is refreshing. It is minty. It smells pretty.  But did you know that mint can help settle an upset belly and aide in digestion?

Lemons are great for making lemonade and for adding a citrus note to a beautiful piece of fish or a little squeeze in your cocktail.  Did you know lemons are great for boosting your immune system and even for helping to curb your appetite?

What about cukes? CUKES ARE MAGICAL! There is so much information out there about cucumbers and their health benefits, but here are a few of the reasons I make them a part of my diet! They have anti inflammatory properties and they are great for re hydrating!  That is why you put them over your eyes to reduce puffiness and rehydrate!  Cucumbers also have a very high water and fiber content which is a great addition to any diet and especially to those who are trying to get beach body ready!  That water will help flush the fat and the fiber helps you to feel satisfied! WIN WIN! They also a great source of silica, which is known to help promote joint health. It’s always a good idea to take care of your joints!

And then we have water. Water is one of the most important things we can put in to our bodies.  Water keeps us alive. We have all heard that our bodies are made up of around 70% water. Have you ever thought about what that means and what that translates into for your muscles and organs?  If you have ever forgotten to water a plant, you know what they look like.  Imagine that happening inside your body. Drinking enough water isn’t just the “in thing”, it is necessary for LIFE!!! It is necessary for healthy cell production, healthy muscle tone, detoxifying your body, and for helping you feel your very best! Have you ever noticed that the people who drink a lot of water seem to always be happy? Just an observation I have made in my years as a water drinker. 🙂

So what happens when we combine all of these things together and leave over night in the fridge?  Well, I’m glad you asked!  After spending the night getting to know each other, they become a kick ass detoxifying monster that not only tastes AMAZING, but helps to flush your body of daily toxins and help curb your hunger pangs. It will also hydrate you while helping you shed some extra pounds! There really is no reason not to drink this water!

What You Will Need:

12 cups filtered or distilled water

1 medium organic cucumber

2-3 organic lemons

10-12 organic mint leaves

Combine all ingredients and let sit over night and then drink throughout the day.  Do this daily and watch what happens.  It makes you feel amazing!

Enjoy this health tonic! Love yourself and do something great for you!

You deserve it!

Getting By With A Little Help From Our Friends

Longtime friends, Rebecca Bodeen and Jennifer Anderson, 1992 graduates of Morse High, had

an idea to help homeless people in their area.  Their intention was to have a very small operation and

have a few bags of necessities to give out if the opportunity arose, but their small idea turned into a

larger operation in a very short amount of time and the Midcoast Maine Bags of Blessings Project was

born. “The idea was to make some bags that we could keep on hand and give if the opportunity came about.

However, what Jennifer and I discovered as we started to share the idea was that a lot of people wanted to

give, and what began small turned into fifty bags in a very short time, with enough items to make more bags the

next month”, says Rebecca.  The bags include simple necessities such as; combs, brushes, toothbrushes,

toothpaste, shampoo, conditioners, hats, hand warmers, mittens, feminine hygiene products, and lotion.

In addition to the adult bags, Rebecca and Jennifer have also been able to put together 30 teen bags

and deliver them to local area schools!   What a kind thing to do for someone in need.  The simple necessities

that come so easily to you and me are truly a blessing to those who so often go without.  Items that are most

needed are feminine hygiene products, both pads and tampons. These things will be included in the teen bags

and would be greatly appreciated as the number of homeless teens continues to rise in Maine.

I asked Rebecca what her favorite part of this program was and she said, “I think what touches both

Jennifer and I is the giving spirit of our community.  There are so many people willing to give and

contribute to this project.  It is humbling to learn about the heart of our community.”  People helping

people and loving thy neighbor are such large pieces of being a part of a community. Sometimes we need

a little help from our friends and the Bath community is so fortunate to be blessed with friends like Bags of

Blessings.

The topic of long term goals came up and we all know they can be ever changing as it depends on what the

future holds. With such a small program and what seems like an endless homelessness crisis,  her response

was perfect and shows the heart and dedication she has for what she and Jennifer are doing; “I am not sure we

have a long term goal as of yet. I know I am amazed by what we have done so far.  I also know that we are

willing to organize, do the work, and continue giving bags for as long as we are able and we both know we

cannot do it without support from others.”  The success of this is completely in the hands of the community.

We lean on each other to help get through the next day and Rebecca has invited us to participate in the next

bag making day which is March 8th. Casco Bay Organics will be matching  the donations of our customers, so if you would like to donate to this amazing project, we will be collecting:

feminine products

full size shampoos and conditioners,

and full size lotions!

Your produce fairies will be more

than happy to collect those items and we will personally be packing them into Bags of Blessings on March 8th!

We would like to extend a HUGE, WARM, ORGANIC THANK YOU to Rebecca and Jennifer for their time,

humanity, and kindness to those who need a little help from time to time.  You have amazing hearts and your

selflessness is a precious gift.

Thank you
